‘I became somebody from nobody.’
That was Muna’s answer when we asked her how her life had changed after she joined WAWCAS: Women at Work, Children at School.
Today Muna runs her own business. Like many other women, she used to rely on backbreaking, low-paid work as daily labourer, but this new source of income allows her to live in dignity and send her children to school.
In this book, you will meet some of the women who are and have been a part of the WAWCAS programme and a couple of their children. You get to know them through their personal stories – not as victims but as human beings with dreams and strengths. Their stories speak of dreams and strengths. Of the will to change, of community and of the ability to translate hope into change.
The changes that the women have accomplished live on through them and help shape their children’s education and future. They have momentum, like a perpetuum mobile – a movement that keeps going, driven by the women themselves.
We also share our own journey as entrepreneurs. Together with the women, their families and a dedicated team in both Nepal and Denmark, we have created an organization and a programme that work – and which continue to grow.
We hope that this book will inspire you to believe that change is possible. That it will heighten your awareness of our shared strength and help you understand how even tiny steps can lead to real change when they are taken persistently; with dignity and with confidence in the resources of individual human beings.
