Part 14 – The Importance of Time

July 2024

As always, before starting the topic, Sima asked us all a question. The question was very interesting and awakened our curiosity. She asked, “What is the gift that nature has given to all of us, both living and non-living?” We gave a lot of answers, and after much discussion, we concluded that the answer was time. It became clear to us that time is a gift given equally by nature to everyone.

Upon hearing the word “time,” I anticipated an interesting discussion ahead. Sima led us into a conversation about the various roles we have been playing since our birth until now. It struck me how many roles a woman assumes over our lifetime. Although everyone plays multiple roles, the most common for us as a woman is that of a daughter-in-law. It is easier to play the role of a daughter than to play the role of a daughter-in-law. In our society, there are many relationships that are difficult to maintain. Relationships like those with a mother-in-law, or the dynamic between Deurani (husband’s younger brother’s wife)) and Jethani (husband’s elder brother’s wife), often deteriorate due to disagreements. Hence, these relationships require more attention and time to nurture. The main reason such relationships suffer is due to mismanagement of time dedicated to understanding and supporting each other.

Currently, we are playing the role of mothers, but at the same time, we cannot neglect the role of a daughter-in-law. Attempting to fulfill all roles simultaneously can lead to more problems. Therefore, when we play each role, we must allocate time appropriately. If a misunderstanding arises while playing a role, it’s essential to sit with the concerned person and discuss the issue.

Sima also made us examine our daily activities. We had a candid discussion about our daily tasks and realized that we waste a significant amount of time on activities that do not benefit us. Sima divided our tasks into four categories:

  1. Necessary and important (to be done by oneself – cannot be postponed)
  2. Necessary but not important (to be delegated)
  3. Important but not necessary (schedule work)
  4. Neither important nor necessary

Following this framework, I analyzed my own tasks and realized that I was giving undue importance to unnecessary activities. For instance, spending too much time watching TV, gossiping, or overusing mobile phones wasted my precious time. I had been wasting three hours daily on such trivial activities.

Understanding this concept, I realized investing my time in my business would be more beneficial than on unnecessary tasks. By focusing on business and income-generating activities, I could earn income, and my recognition in society would also increase.

After comprehending the importance of time, I created a schedule for time management at home, prioritizing my business over other activities. My children also help with household chores, and I have been teaching them to work a little in their free time after finishing their studies.

When Sima visited my home, she noticed my progress and was happy to see how I had changed. Before, I didn’t understand the importance of time and had no vision for the future. But now, I realize that to create a beautiful future, we must work diligently today. Tasks done on time lead to success tomorrow, so we should not procrastinate.

Understanding and valuing time has transformed my life, making me more productive and fulfilled. I learnt to balance my roles effectively and work towards a better future with determination and purpose.
