Part 14 – Our Commitment to Change: Children Begin Their Time Management Journey

November 2025

Namaste,

In today’s Aawaj Child Group discussion session, we began by reviewing our previous meeting and then moved into the day’s topic—Time Management.

I introduced the session by asking the question: “how many hours do we have?” The children looked at each other and raised their hands and said, “24 hours.” Can we minimize? Everyone said “NO”. “Can we expand from 24 hours to 25 hours?” Everyone laughed and said “NO”, and I started to explain that using time wisely and organizing our tasks according to time is what we call time management. Time management is not only important for adults; it is equally essential for the growth and development of children. It helps children balance their studies, play, skill-building, family time, and rest. All the children agreed and responded positively.

As the discussion continued, I asked why time management is important for children. Everyone shared their thoughts, and I added the following points:

  • It teaches discipline and responsibility.
  • It increases concentration in studies.
  • It reduces stress.
  • It helps manage time for play, creativity, and rest.
  • It builds good habits for the future. It helps children follow a proper daily schedule. For every child to become a good, wise, and successful person with a strong character, learning time management is essential.

During the discussion, we shared some effective ways to learn time management:

  • Prepare a daily routine and follow it.
  • Display the routine on a wall at home where everyone can see it.
  • Limit the use of mobile phones and television.
  • Make playtime compulsory.
  • Parents should model positive behaviors and discipline.

Time management is not just something to be taught in the classroom. It is a daily life skill that connects our habits, family life, play, and studies. We also discussed some simple and useful skills children can practice:

  • Learning to prioritize tasks.
  • Avoiding the habit of doing many things at the same time, such as studying, playing, or entertaining themselves.
  • Taking short breaks in between tasks.
  • Setting small achievable goals.
  • Doing work that deserves appreciation.

We all have the same 24 hours in a day, but our responsibilities differ. Sometimes tasks feel overwhelming, leaving little time to eat, rest, play, or relax. However, falling behind because of poor time management should not happen. Only when we manage our time wisely do we truly understand its value. Just like money, time must also be accounted for and used wisely every day.

In the end, I conducted a fun activity so that everyone could enjoy. Together, we—children and facilitators—made a commitment to start managing our time effectively from today onwards. After informing them about our next discussion topic, I concluded the session.

Yours sincerely,
Binod Kumar Ram
